The Marriage Chair serves as a poignant metaphor for the intricacies of relationships — emphasizing the need for balance, support, and unity while honoring the individuality and shared experiences of the partners involved. The chair’s duality, with seats on either side of the towering back, represents the shared experiences of a relationship, where each individual brings their unique perspective while being interconnected by the central pillar of their togetherness; a shared backbone. The 118” ladder-back design signifies the ascent of life’s challenges and experiences, where each rung represents milestones and shared moments in partnership. Through the height of the ladder-back, the rungs become thin, and sparse; denoting future milestones, these rungs are not weight bearing, not immediately reachable, rather a glimpse into what could be. The counterbalanced structure requires the mutual support and equilibrium necessary for a successful ascension — one must sit in support for the other to climb.
